JSTROKE: A J stroke allows you to paddle in a straight line while on one side of your board. It is accomplished at the end of a power stroke by twisting the grip and shaft with the top hand. Push the thumb forward for the twist. The paddle travels in a J-shaped arc away from the tail of the board. The power face is engaged through the twist and faces away from the tail of the board at the stroke completion and counteracts the natural turning effect of the power stroke.

LOW BRACE: A balancing stroke with the arms held close to the body and the back face of the paddle held against the flow of water for support.

MOTION TURN: As paraphrased from the Werner Paddles website: The motion turn involves moving forward with speed, taking a step or two back, and sinking the tail. While doing this, make a strong reverse stroke on the side of the board you want to turn. As the board spins, take a strong forward paddle on the opposite side while stepping forward. You will be going in the opposite direction.

PEEL OUT: Cmac says: A river boarding term, you paddle from the eddy into the oncoming current. This turns you downstream.

PIVOT TURN: See jibe.

POWER STROKE: The meat of the forward stroke. Once the blade is in the water, the power stroke pulls with your core muscles and your arms to sweep the paddle back to your feet and a little farther; the length of the power stroke depends on the proclivities of the paddler. The power stroke for the Tahitian stroke is shorter than the Hawaiian stroke.
